How Do I Love Thee?

How Do I Love Thee?

To the endless bemusement of those of us who live in Dumfries and Galloway – we are frequently asked (in one form or another, and not always with grace) why we live here? What is it that has us so enamoured?

So it’s thanks to tonight’s airing of BBC 1’s Countryfile that I pass on these images.. as visual evidence for our choice.

In case my own photographic love affair is not evidence enough.

The international landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy lives in Dumfries and Galloway. In demand all over the world, he makes sure he returns here for a large part of winter – when the conditions most inspire his work.

Goldsworthy’s work weaves it’s way in and out of the features of the natural landscape, and is directly influenced by them.

Landscape is not the backdrop or the canvas in these works – it is celebrated as the source. It becomes a partner in the organic hands on process.

Often the work is ephemeral and lasts only as long as the weather conditions allow.

Ice sculptures are constructed by spitting on the two pieces to be joined – the frozen saliva forming a ‘glue’ – the colder the temperature the stronger, and faster the bond.

Extra-ordinary structures are achieved.

This landscape moves, touches and inspires.

How Do I Love Thee?

Let me count the ways..
